Newsletter 4 November

Angie Cottis writes "Monday proved to be an interesting evening with the judging of our James Wilson Trophy Abstract competition. I was glad I wasn't the judge!  I guess we won't be having that topic again. I think that maybe we all have different ideas of what abstract is - certainly different from the judges thoughts in many cases.  Irrespective of this, there were some great images, so well done everyone who entered, especially those who were placed". If you check out our competitions gallery, you will find all of the images that were placed and highly commended from the evening.

On Monday 11th November we have the WCPF Travelling Print Exhibition and Critique.  This is an evening where PPC members provide personal critiques of successful high scoring prints from the WCPF Members Exhibition.

Members Review Night

And now for something completely new for PPC. Monday 28th October is our first ever Members Review Night where entries are discussed and critiqued rather than judged. Stuart has asked that everyone submits two DPI's via the Photo Entry system for inclusion in the nights events. These can be any photo you wish to submit, for example one you are not sure about and would like some constructive feedback on how to improve it, or maybe one you really like and simply want an opinion of what others think. The last date for entry is Friday 25 October so get your entries in as soon as possible.

Section 1 Open Theme Update

Wow, what a great night for our first open DPI competition. Over 80 entries in total across the three member sections, including 20 or so of the best images I have ever seen in Section B. Well done to everyone who entered. David Snowdon, our judge for the night, appeared hard pressed to select the placed and highly commended images from those submitted, a testament to the quality on offer. As Alex Hamer commented, this all bodes well for Paignton in some of the upcoming inter-club battles as well as in the WCPF and salon competitions that we will be involved with. You can find the placed and highly commended entries by clicking here.

Local Photoshop / Lightroom workshops planned for January 2020

Message from Stuart Chapman

One continuing topic at the club always seems to be about processing your image. So having had discussions with Dave Collerton and our friendly local professional photographer David Clapp, we have got some preliminary ideas for a series of tutorials. The idea is for 3 sessions on an evening from 7.00 to 9.30 one in January, February and March and will be based on Photoshop / Lightroom. Content and location is yet to be confirmed but depending on numbers Dave C. says we could use Escape Artist Studio in Torquay. So what we need is numbers of people who would like to attend.

Now we would be looking at a cost of £60 per person for the 3 evenings, which would be payable in advance. For now just email me if you are serious about attending, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Once we have idea of numbers we can confirm further details.

"You are the Judge" with Ian Bateman

PPC were pleased to play host last night to the thoroughly entertaining Ian Bateman and his travelling workshop "You Are The Judge". With the audience broken down into 9 groups of 5 people each, the idea was for each group to judge the same 20 photos in a tightly timed 20 minutes. As we found out, that is not as easy as it sounds and even within a group, scores could and did vary dramatically. When the results were reviewed later in the sesdion, it was not unusual to see scores, which were out of a maximum of 20 points per image, ranging between 12 - 20. What this demonstrated was that it's not easy judging other people's work, let alone come up with constructive criticism that  helps the photographer move forward. After the judging, Ian asked for the reasons behind the scores from each groups spokesperson. He also outlined how well each image had done in previous competitions. Interestingly, the image achieving the best result overall was one from 30 years ago, a 35mm colour slide of a landscape scene converted to a print. A good image is a good image irrespective of how or when it was taken. An extremely stimulating evening, considered one of the best the club has run by many of the attending club members. A huge thanks to Ian Bateman for allowing us the opportunity to share, even if for a brief time, the role of the judge
